Who Am I? Self-Portraiture as Self-Identity, Exploration and Expression.

The way we see ourselves is such an important thing. Understanding self-identity enables a better understanding of the world and of the people around ourselves.

Self-portraiture is an important method through which artists express their personalities, beliefs and ideas. It is also a tool in which we can examine our identity which has resulted from the influence of our past challenges and emotional experience which can lead to a higher level of self-awareness.

The self-portrait is an open and unique way of depicting our-selves, whether it’s through a straightforward portrait, a carefully staged composition and setting, or an enigmatic mirror image. It can be full of passion, dreams and inspiration, echoing the experiences and places we have been or have yet to go to.
Drawing yourself can be a great self-healing process through purposeful, creative work.
With visibility comes vulnerability and there is a lot of strength in this form of intimacy.
So, let’s try to depict what corner of your world looks like.

Let’s dive into this creative process together during this short workshop of artistic exploration.
During this 16hour workshop you will be guided through all the steps of drawing and painting your own portrait from the mirror. You will led through the process of working on the basic principles of composition, correct proportions, eye/hand coordination, value and shading.

TIMELINE:
Session 1: Drawing self-portrait
April 16^th, Saturday, 9am – 1pm
As it will be our first session, please arrive to the studio 15min earlier, so we can proceed smoothly at 9am.
We will start from toning our drawing paper using ink, watercolor or acrylic paint. After that you will be guided to draw your own portrait from the mirror. We will be working on the basic principle of composition, correct proportions, eye/hand coordination, value and shading. I will be demonstrating drawing the self-portrait on toned paper using white and black charcoal.
Materials and tools included and available in this session:
Easel, mirror, pencils, white and black charcoals, toned drawing paper.
Tools that you can bring and use in this session:
Your private travelling easel. Whatever is easy and fast to work with. I would advise a larger piece of toned paper and working with any of these mediums: charcoal, pencil, oil pastels, colored pencils etc
How to make your own toned paper at home:
THE PROCESS
Step 1: Carefully stick the paper on the board with the tape. We recommend to not just stick the angles with the tape, but the entire length of the paper itself, so that it won´t slip away.
Step 2: Use the pipette to put the ink into the bowl of water. Instead of ink you can use diluted watercolor paint or acrylic paint. Suggested colors are earthy tones as burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw umber.
Step 3: Mix the in/watercolor/acrylic paint and the water with the brush. Now test the mixture we have obtained on the small extra piece of paper, to see if the color is good or not.
Step 4: Start stroking the brush with the water-ink/paint mixture and spread it evenly on the paper. First with vertical brush strokes and then with horizontal ones.
Step 5: If the result is even, the process is finished. Leave the paper on the board for 24 hours to let it dry.
The next day you can start drawing on your toned paper. For the preparation and the toning process you only need about 15 minutes. However, the drying phase, as we have seen, lasts longer. Therefore, in the end, you need 24 hours.

Session 2: Composition, Transfer of Drawing, Imprimatura and Decalcomania
April 23^rd, Saturday, 9am – 1pm
Transferring self-portrait drawing on the canvas/panel board using tracing and/or transfer paper.

Tracing paper is a semi-transparent paper you can use to trace an image or drawing.

Graphite Transfer Paper is a specialized transfer paper that uses carbon to transfer a design from one surface to another.

During this session we will be talking about composition, tangents and armature in art. After that we will transfer our own portrait from the paper to a canvas/panel board. We will do some exercises to learn about different tools and method in applying first layer of color. Next, we will apply the imprimatura as a basic ground on our main panel and after that we will start to paint with white paint to establish the value in your self-portrait (eye/hand coordination, value and shading).

Tracing paper, decalcomania tools, graphite pencils, panel boards, ink, acrylic paints, brushes.
Session 3: Underpainting and Glazing (Exercise and main panel)
April 30^rd, Saturday, 9am – 1pm
In this session we will first practice some exercises to be more familiar with the process of underpainting and glazing. Using white acrylic paint or casein we will be working on values to build three-dimensional form, atmosphere and space in our work. After that we proceed to first glaze on our practice and later on main panel.
Materials and tools included and available in session 3:
Acrylic paints and acrylic mediums, set of brushes, water cups/jars.
Using white acrylic paint or casein we will be working on values in our first underpainting
Session 4: 2nd Underpainting & Local Glazing
May 7^th, 9am – 1pm
Local glazing techniques by using acrylic paints. Working on stronger light and highlights and applying local glazes in the painting.

Acrylic paints and acrylic mediums, set of brushes, water cups/jars, rags
